Issue 10.1.23 ~ beast feast

Who climbs & eats acorns?

Welcome to
WHISPERshout Poetry Magazine, Issue 10, Number 1, 2023!

Happy October, everyone! Here you’ll find new original poems by kids ages 4-12 here at what we think is the only online journal of kids’ poetry in the U.S.! We publish a handful of poems each month, often with accompanying artwork (and sometimes a poet’s photo), and WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO SUBMIT YOUR WORK, and to comment on what you read here.

If you are a teacher developing a poetry habit in your classroom, you might find this is the all the lesson you need! Email whispershoutmagazine@gmail.com to receive each issue direct to your inbox.

POEM #1
In this part of the world, we are seeing
many more acorns and other tree seeds than usual—called a “mast year.” That’s making You-Know-Who very very happy! PreK students read poems from the book THINGS TO DO and then composed their own poem telling a squirrel how to behave.

“Things To Do If You Are a Squirrel” - PreK, MD

POEM #3
In this one, the poet Ollie is not talking TO the animal in his poem; he’s speaking AS the animal. This is sometimes called a mask poem, because the writer pretends to be the person, animal or thing in the poem, like putting on a mask or costume.

“I want to meet you” by Ollie - 2nd grade, MD

POEM #3
This poet, Mo, is trying out writing in a combination of English, his home language, and Spanish, which he’s learning in school. Just as he’s combining languages, Mo combines two very different animals in his poem, both of them bright and shining “en el sol” (in the sun).

“El pequeño tiger” by Mo - 2nd grade, MD

POEM #4
Maybe you’ve seen an Eric Carle book or two, and
how he made his illustrations by painting paper and then cutting shapes which he glued together. Our last poet, Carter, did the same, and then composed a simple but s-s-s-sinuous poem about a snake.

“snake” by Carter - age 5, MD

That's our four beastly poems for this issue. Let us know what you liked by leaving a comment below!

See you next time for Issue 10.2, which will publish on October 25—if we have received new poems!  And remember, you can submit YOUR work by email--just click the button below--and thanks for WHISPERshouting with us!
